Eine der goeßeren Gemeinheiten innerhalb GSM ist Timing Advance. Dieser Wert drückt (indirekt) die Länge des Wegs aus, den die Funkwellen vom Telefon zur Basisstation nehmen. Nämlich: Das Zeitschema in GSM ist so eng gewählt, daß das Telefon sein Datenpaket vor Beginn des Empfangszeitschlitzes an der Basisstation absenden muß, damit dieses dort innerhalb des Empfangsfensters eintrifft. TA gibt die Anzahl Bitzeiten an, die der Sendeburst "vorverlegt" werden muß, damit er im korrekten Zeitschlitz bei der BTS eintrifft. Der Wert wird vom Netz (genauer: von der BTS) ermittelt und dem Telefon vorgegeben. TA01 entspricht bei reflektionsfreiem Übertragungsweg (!) einer ungefähren Entfernung von 550m zur Basisstation. TA kann Werte von 0-63 annehmen und entspricht damit Werten von 0 - 233µs. Dieses wiederum ist der wesentliche Grund für die maximale Goeße einer Zelle mit rmax=35.000m. Dieser maximale Radius kann allerdings mit gewissen Tricks erhöht werden.
